Course Sections
Select the section to assign this user to from the drop-down menu.
Select an existing section that contains students enrollments (alpha-numeric, e.g., 000.UFL.2014.05-UF-0.737C)
Select the INIT section, which is generally used to enroll additional Teachers, TAs, Observers, Guest Lecturers, Auditors, Facilitator, and Designers.
Select the MISC section, which is generally used to enroll students for making up an incomplete or to give students special access to an exam.
Course Shell Types
Development Shell. Site where you can start developing your official University of Florida course sites before you have an official section number through the University Registrar.
Extension. Any external public-facing seminar or training session. If you're hosting a seminar or are teaching an IFAS extension course, this is the option that you're looking for.
Personal Sandbox. Site designed to give you a personal course site that you can use to play around with the system and try new things without worrying that you'll mess your course site up while you're learning.
Project Site. An internal site used for project coordination and file exchange. In the past, many departments used e-Learning course sites for coordinating internships, thesis preparation, etc. If you're working on a project with others in your department or you need a work site for your lab group, you'll want to choose this option.
Template Site. Used by colleges to host course or college-wide templates of course data that they want to copy into their courses. If you're working out a generic set of files or images that you'd like to include in all of your department's course sites, you could set up a template site. Then you can use Canvas's ability to import content from another course site to transfer your content into your course sites.
Training/Seminar. Internal training sessions or seminars. If you're offering a training session or seminar that's internal to the University of Florida, this is the option that you'll want to choose.

Drawing Programs
These programs are for the actual on screen writing that the Khan videos are so well known for. Essentially, you can use any drawing program from Adobe Photoshop, to Paint in order to create the images on your screen. The real heavy lifting is done by the capture programs listed above. Here are some of the options available, but you probably already have one or more programs on your computer that can do this.
- SmoothDraw3 (Free): Sal Khan's official choice integrates nicely with a graphic tablet.
- Windows Paint (Free): This free program is pretty basic, but will do the job – and it's probably already installed on your PC.
- Pencil (Free): This powerful free program allows you to not only draw, but also to import vector graphics, video, and other formats, and to animate those assets using key frames. More complicated, but for someone looking to make some truly engaging and interactive videos, this would be a fun choice.
- GIMP (Free): The Gnu Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) is one of the staple free programs for those looking to do graphics work but not pay the heavy price for Photoshop. Essentially this is a slightly less-robust Photoshop clone, but the price is right.
- Autodesk SketchBook Pro ($59): There is a free trial for this program as well as an iPad app, so you can take this option on the road with you. This program offers professional quality sketching and illustration tools, so it might be overkill for screencasting, but it offers a lot of flexibility for future use.
- Adobe Photoshop ($699) or Photoshop Elements ($99): Photoshop is the industry standard for graphics works and is sufficiently versatile to allow you to create almost any graphic you could imagine. Again, probably overkill for screencasting, particularly at the price, but the high-end features are unrivaled.
- Draw It to Know It - “Draw it to Know it is a great learning tool. It combines the type of hands-on, anatomic drawing my anatomy teachers recommended in medical school with superb tutorials, challenging examination questions, and MRI imaging localization.” Donald Gilbert MD, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical left. FlipGrid
Creating collaborative learning experiences is imperative to increasing learner engagement and creating a community within your course. Through collaboration, students can work together with peers to negotiate meaning and view topics from different perspectives. Flipgrid is a tool that allows students to collaboratively discuss different topics through video responses to a specific topic. Through this tool, students can easily view and reply to their fellow students' or teacher's posts. From a grading perspective, all student responses are recorded in Speedgrader (Links to an external site.) within Canvas for easy grading.
Quick Start
- Add the Flipgrid application (Links to an external site.) (Part 1) to your course within your course settings
- To install the Flipgrid application in Canvas, you will need to generate a "Shared Secret" and "Consumer Key." Navigate to the Flipgrid Educator Dashboard (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.)in a browser window and log in to your account using the Microsoft login option. From the home screen of the website, hover over your account profile in the upper-right corner of the page. Select "Integrations" from the drop-down menu. Then, select "New Integration" and enter a name for your integration.
- Creating a new integration will generate a "Consumer Key" and "Shared Secret" to add in your course "Settings" by selecting "Apps" from the menu across the top of the screen, selecting "Flipgrid," and then "Add App." Copy your newly created "Consumer Key" and "Shared Secret" from the Flipgrid Admin webpage and paste the information in the corresponding fields.
- Create the Canvas Assignment using the External Tool feature (Links to an external site.) (Flipgrid is already available as a choice)
- Save your assignment to launch Flipgrid to create a topic
- Once the Flipgrid interface has loaded, select a "Add a Topic Focus"
- Then, fill out the title, prompt, recording time and select "Update Topic"
What You Should Know
- When logging into Flipgrid, select "Microsoft login." You should either be signed in automatically or you will use your UF login credentials to sign in.
- Add any copilots (other instructors, facilitators, or TAs) to your grid from the Flipgrid Educator Dashboard (Links to an external site.)under "Actions" for the course's Flipgrid
- Responses to topics are automatically added to Speedgrader for the assignment that Flipgrid is integrated with.
- Please note, all topics are visible in every integrated Flipgrid assignment; however, the corresponding assignment will appear as the default topic.
- Students can respond to multiple topics in one assignment; however, their responses will only be recorded within Speedgrader for the assignment that they are currently working on.
- For more information in regards to using Flipgrid, please view the Flipgrid Educator FAQ page (Links to an external site.).

Lynda Training UF offers to Student and Faculty
Lynda.Com is Now LinkedIn Learning
May 21, 2019.
UFIT transitioned the Lynda.com service to LinkedIn Learning between the Spring and Summer A semesters. The new online training platform includes all of the courses from Lynda.com plus thousands of additional technology, business, marketing, leadership, and lifestyle offerings. All you need are valid Gatorlink credentials and an internet connection for FREE 24/7 access.
Now that the transition is complete, any courses you took on Lynda will show up in your LinkedIn Learning “history”. In addition to the number of available courses doubling on the new platform, LinkedIn Learning also provides an enhanced user experience, including course recommendations based on your job title, geographic location, and market trends. Learners can also add badges for completed trainings to their LinkedIn professional profile. The UF Computing Help Desk is ready to help you transition to LinkedIn Learning! Just call (352-392-HELP/4357), email, or stop by Hub 132 during walk-in hours for assistance.
MAC ISSUES
MAC with no extensions
By Default MAC computers HIDE EXTENSIONS -> THE FIX
MAC on Wireless...
There is a known issue with Sophos anti-virus on Mac's running OS-X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). Basically, the Sophos service shuts itself off periodically, and the client gets quarantined from the wireless. There is a discussion thread on the Sophos anti-virus web-site because this appears to be a known issue.
Macintosh File Extensions:
Many times Macintosh disables or HIDES extensions on files. This will cause an issue for assignments. Your instructor will not be able to open the file. ALWAYS make sure that Hide extensions is UNCHECKED!!! In the example below the homework is not going to be able to be graded. Resulting in a Zero Grade.

- Camtasia Studio ($200): The official choice of the Khan Academy, Camtasia Studio, or Camtasia Recorder is a robust program that allow for considerable editing after the video is recorded. Here is the official demo video for how to use this program: DEMO
- Camstudio (Free): This free, open source program is basic but effective, allowing you to capture video and audio and produce AVI and Flash movies.
- Adobe Captivate ($799): Captivate is the professional level tool that has the most robust editing tools. It also allows you to make interactive quizzes and Flash presentations. This is a program that I have used to create online training applications. It might be overkill for this use, but does provide a lot of flexibility should you need it
- Screenhunter (Free): The free version of this program allows for basic video capture of your computer screen.
- Snagit (Free Trial): More robust than Screenhunter, this program allows for some editing after the recording, but is only a free trial – the full version is $49.
- Free Screen Video Capture (Free): This freebie allows you to capture full screen or a selected window and contains its own built-in compression program to export video in a variety of formats with some nice controls.
