FRE Scholarships

2024/25

Applications are now being accepted for the 2024-25 Academic Year Food and Resource Economics Departmental (FRE) Scholarships.  FRE gives more than $56,000 annually in scholarships to deserving students, with amounts ranging from $500 to $13,800. Most of the awards are in the $1,000 - $2,000 range.  These scholarships are awarded at the departmental level and not part of the CALS scholarship awards.

Funds will be distributed at the beginning of Fall 2024 Semester (unless otherwise noted in the scholarship description).

Final selection of students to receive a FRE scholarship will based on the review of the application by FRE Scholarship Committee, scholarship criteria and funding availability.  

Applicants must meet the following criteria to apply:

  1. Enrolled as an FRE major
  2. Registered as a full-time student
    • Undergraduate students - a minimum of 12 credit hours
    • Graduate students - a minimum of 9 credit hours
  3. Minimum 2.5 GPA (most scholarships require at least a 3.0 GPA)

  • Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • Applications after the deadline will not be accepted
  • All applications must be complete and signed
  • Applications will require you to upload a CV/Resume, contact information for three references, and evidence of financial need (if applying for need-based awards).

Scholarship awards are granted on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, professional potential, and in some cases, financial need.  All applicants will receive notification of scholarship decisions in May 2024. Scholarships will be applied to 2024/25 fall and spring tuition.

    *Mr. and Mrs. John V. D’Albora, Jr. Scholarship in Honor of J. Wayne Reitz

    Support scholarships to capable undergraduate and/or graduate students in agriculture. Recipients of the award will be selected on the basis of merit and financial need, without consideration of any other awards or stipends which a potential recipient may have received. This is a need-based award.


    Cecil N. and Cecile G. Smith Scholarship

    This is a support scholarship for students in FRE.


    *The Robert G. Stubbs and Henry G. Hamilton Scholarship

    Support undergraduate or graduate student(s) majoring in FRE. Selection of student(s) shall be based on financial need first and academic achievement second. Preference in the selection of the student(s) to receive this scholarship shall be given to students who have graduated from a Florida high school with an agricultural background. The student(s) should have a sincere desire to pursue a career related to agriculture in the state of Florida. This is a need-based award.


    Werner and Margaret C. Husmann Scholarship

    This is a support scholarships/fellowships in FRE.

  • Undergraduate Awards

    Hal W. Lively Memorial Scholarship

    (65% of the cost to attend UF. This award will be paid in ½ increments each semester, fall and spring.) This award is a support scholarship for majors in agricultural economics specializing in food marketing and distribution. To be eligible for this award, recipients must be a Florida resident and completed course work for freshman and sophomore years.  They must maintain the field of study, be in good academic standing, and make satisfactory progress toward graduation. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of additional payments. Juniors receiving this scholarship will receive the amount for four total semesters.


    *R. Holt Howard Endowed Scholarship Fund

    This is a support scholarship for undergraduate students in FRE. Recipients will be selected on the basis of scholastic achievement, need, and professional promise. This award is need-based.


    *Don Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund

    This is a support scholarship for undergraduate students in FRE.  Applicants need to have taken business ethics or at least one (1) credit hour of an ethics course. Students must have a minimum 2.75 GPA and have performed community service. This award is need-based.


    Food and Resource Economics Chair’s Scholarship

    This award supports an internship or volunteer experience that deepens the student's knowledge of the economics of the agricultural food environmental system.  Undergraduate students with 3.5 GPA or higher are eligible for this award.


    Stephen Futch Extension Food and Resource Economics Scholarship

    This award supports FRE students with 3.0 GPA or higher who have graduated from an accredited public or private high school in Florida.  Preference will be given students who have graduated from a high school in the following counties: Indian River, Hardee, DeSoto, Manatee, Sarasota, Polk or Pasco.

  • Graduate Awards

    J.E. Ross International Travel Award

    This award provides international travel assistance to graduate students in FRE who are preparing for careers in international trade and development. Please include a budget in your statement. This award will be disbursed at the time of travel.


    Phillip L. Herndon Endowment in Economics

    This award supports graduate students studying citrus related economics in FRE either on campus or in a distance education program. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.


    Harold B. Clark Award

    This award provides financial support for students in FRE to engage in research projects and professional development/employment opportunities both in academics and the private sector. Such opportunities include travel needed to conduct research and travel to present research results at professional meetings.  Support will be awarded on merit with preference to graduate students. It is the donor’s wish that the recipients of this award will consider donating back to this fund later in their career when they are more financially secure, thereby helping future students realize their professional goals.

Needs-based Awards Information

Students MUST be certified by SFA as “needy” and must have a current FAFSA on file with Student Financial Aid. FAFSA form is located at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students not eligible to apply through FAFSA must complete a Determination of Financial Need Form. Please see the FRE Administrative Assistant, Candy Kaswinkel, for a copy of this form. Failure to complete this form will forfeit the award.
