Summary
Leveraging resources and information produced through complementary past and ongoing efforts underway at the University of Florida (UF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the project titled, “Assessment of the short- and long-term socioeconomic impacts of Florida’s 2017 - 2019 red tide event” aimed to quantify and qualify the socioeconomic impacts of the 2017 - 2019 red tide event in Florida. To this end, the project team completed assessments of the following:
- Knowledge and perceptions related to red tide in southwest Florida
- Socioeconomic impacts of the 2017 - 2019 red tide event, including estimates for:
- Commercial fishing activity
- Recreational fishing activity
- Activity within peer-to-peer accommodations
- Visitation to affected regions by Floridians and non-Floridians
- Residential property values
- Potential metrics for measuring community vulnerability to red tide events
In addition, the results from this project informed national-scale efforts to quantify the socioeconomic impacts of and measure community vulnerability and resiliency to HABs. Finally, to broadly communicate the outcomes beyond academic publications, the project team developed a communications toolkit for state and local government agencies and tourism/visitor bureaus as well as two guidance documents, one for policymakers and one for academic researchers, that aim to quickly share lessons learned, best practices, and key findings from this project.
