Assessment of Agricultural Losses Resulting from Hurricane Helene

Summary

The tropical system that would become Hurricane Helene developed into a tropical storm on September 24, 2024, in the northwest Caribbean Sea near the Yucatan Peninsula before strengthening into a hurricane the next day and moving into the Gulf of Mexico. It rapidly intensified, attaining Category 4 strength with 140 mph winds before making landfall near Perry, FL (Taylor County) on September 26.

Data are being collected via the Assessment of Losses and Damages to Florida Agriculture from Hazard/Disaster Events tool, which has been used to assess several events in the recent past, including Hurricanes Michael, Ian, Idalia, and Debby.

A summary of the UF/IFAS Economic Impact Analysis Program (EIAP)’s efforts to rapidly assess state-level agricultural losses by commodity group due to Hurricane Helene are summarized in a preliminary report, linked below. Data will continue to be collected via the UF/IFAS Post-Disaster Assessment of the Agricultural Impacts of Hurricane Helene for use in a final report to be released at a later date.
